North Atlantic zooplankton decline worries scientists

Scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found springtime counts of zooplankton, which are a foundation for the ocean’s food chain, far below average.

The Associated Press reported the zooplankton levels off the coast of northern New England were the lowest ever, after temperatures off the Northeast U.S. hit an all-time high in 2012.

The latest count raises concerns because the normal surge in plankton off the coast aligns with spawning of cod, haddock and many other species.
