Navy and defense experts say that a leak detected on the Zumwalt built at Bath Iron Works is not unusual for first-in-class ships like the guided-missile destroyer.
The Portland Press Herald reported that crew members discovered the seawater leak in the ship’s propulsion system on Monday while it was docked at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, where it will stay for the next 10 to 14 days for repairs.
“You’re going to see these kinds of challenges come up, especially in these beginning phases,” Eric Wertheim, a defense consultant affiliated with the U.S. Naval Institute, told the Press Herald. “It would be surprising not to have teething problems with these first-in-class ships.”
