Representatives of Maine’s restaurant and retail industries say they will ask the state’s Legislature to revoke or change some of the components of the measure to increase Maine’s minimum wage, which was approved by voters by a wide margin.
The Portland Press Herald reported that those looking to make the changes are not against raising the minimum wage to $12, but say they are against the elimination of the tip credit for employers with workers that get a majority of their wages from tips and future adjustments to the minimum wage based on inflation.
“For restaurants in the state, the results of Question 4 are going to be, you know, seismic,” Peter Gore, vice president of advocacy and government relations for the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, told the Press Herald. “I’m not sure if people fully comprehend what this is going to do to the many restaurants and small businesses they frequent.”
