Orono Public Library receives LEED certification

The Orono Public Library, designed by Bangor firm WBRC Architects-Engineers, has earned a LEED gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building’s green and sustainable features include low-emitting materials, increased ventilation and the use of regional materials to boost the local economy, according to a press release from WBRC.

Originally, the building was designed to earn a LEED silver designation but has met all the criteria for a gold award. The building was completed in the fall of 2009 after a four-year-long fundraising effort by the Orono Public Library Foundation, according to news channel WABI-5.

WBRC has performed design work for a number of LEED projects, including the platinum-certified Hannaford Bros. Co. store in Augusta, the MDI Biological Laboratory in Salisbury Cove and the University of Maine’s AEWC Advanced Structures and Composites Center in Orono.
