Own a piece of ‘60s folk music history in Blue Hill

A  four-story, multi-family dwelling in Blue Hill, once home to a recording studio for Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary fame, is on the market for $1.2 million.

The Henhouse, located at 515 Falls Bridge Road, was originally a commercial chicken coop built in 1958. Stookey later converted it into a professional music studio and living spaces.

It was also home to Northeast Historic Films and to WERU 89.9 FM, a community-supported radio station.

Stookey moved with his wife and three daughters from New York City to Blue Hill in 1974.

The 7,700-square-foot renovated chicken coop became a gathering spot for the local arts community and attracted local and international musicians.

Stookey recorded several Maine artists at the space, including singer-songwriter David Mallett, along with his own Bodyworks band, with whom he produced three albums between 1979 and 1985.

At age 87, Stookey still lives in Blue Hill and his daughter Kate Stookey is president and CEO of Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

The building sits on just over two acres overlooking Blue Hill Bay and was last sold in 2016 for $215,000. It’s been upgraded with new kitchens on the first, second and third floors, a new propane central heating system and a new roof.

Blue Hill-based Christopher Group LLC is the listing agency for the property.

There are five apartments in the building.

The 1,900-square-foot first and second-floor units each have two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The third floor has a large one-bedroom apartment and a two-bedroom apartment. The top floor, which was Stookey’s recording studio, now has a large loft-like apartment that has been rented seasonally, and each unit has views of Blue Hill Bay.
