A regional fisheries commission has said the moratorium on shrimp fishing in Maine should remain in effect in 2016.
The Associated Press reported that interstate Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Northern Shrimp Technical Committee will ask the Northern Shrimp Section to extend the moratorium at a Dec. 7 meeting due to poor prospects for the recovery of the shrimp population.
Shrimp fishing has been banned in Maine since 2013.
The shrimp technical committee said in a reported that the warming of New England waters will make an “increasingly inhospitable” environment for shrimp and that conservation measures are needed.
