Portland Public Schools foundation gets donation for its food fund

Town & Country Federal Credit Union is highlighting its support for local families with a contribution aimed at reducing student hunger in Portland schools.

Through its “local helping local” initiative, the credit union presented a $2,500 donation to the Foundation for Portland Public Schools, which coordinates the Portland Public Schools Food Fund.

“We work closely with school social workers and a network of local food security partners to try to ensure that every student in Portland has access to healthy, culturally appropriate food,” said Andi Summers, executive director of the Foundation for Portland Public Schools. “It’s very difficult for kids to focus on learning if they are hungry.”

The Foundation for Portland Public Schools provides discounted grocery store gift cards to support school-based food pantries and healthy snack programs.

Linda Halleran, the community engagement manager at Town & Country, said the effort reflects the institution’s focus on the connection between food insecurity and financial stability.

“Food insecurity and financial wellness are deeply connected, especially for families with children,” said Halleran. “When parents are worried about putting food on the table, it impacts every part of their financial picture, from paying bills to building savings. For kids, not having consistent access to nutritious meals can affect their health, learning, and overall well-being.”

Town & Country is ranked No. 5 among the largest Maine-based credit unions, with assets of $610 million as of Sept. 30, 2025, according to the 2026 Mainebiz Book of Lists.

The credit union is headquartered in Scarborough and has branches in Portland, South Portland and Saco.
