Portland’s State Theatre, a mainstay of the city’s Arts District since 1929, is in the running for a national award from the Academy of Country Music — a first for the venue.
The historic theater in Maine’s largest city has some tough competition, including Nashville’s venerable Grand Ole Opry.
The State Theatre was nominated by the academy for its country music programming over the past year, though the 1,900-seat venue hosts a range of national touring artists and genres from hard rock to comedians.
Lauren Wayne, manager and president of State Theatre Presents, said it is “truly humbling” to be mentioned alongside iconic venues like Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry and Ryman Auditorium.
“Our mission has always been to present a wide range of artists and genres, creating meaningful live experiences for our community,” she told Mainebiz. “Country music is an important part of that mix, and we’re proud to welcome many talented artists within the genre alongside so many others throughout the year.”

Other performance halls nominated are the Blue Gate Theatre in Shipshewana, Ind., and the Franklin Theatre in Franklin, Tenn.
‘Vibrant’ music community
“This recognition is really a reflection of the artists, fans and our dedicated team who bring the theatre to life night after night,” Wayne said. “We’re grateful to be part of such a vibrant live music community and remain committed to showcasing diverse performances that bring people together.”
In addition to performances at the theater’s 21,000-square-foot home at 609 Congress St., the State puts on shows at the outdoor arena at Thompson’s Point in Portland.
The 61st Academy of Country Music Awards will be streamed live on Amazon Prime Video on Sunday, May 17.
