Sears will leave the Aroostook Centre Mall in mid-October, the company announced, closing its store there that is an anchor tenant and employs 58 people.
The Bangor Daily News said Howard Riefs, a Sears spokesman, said no other store closures are planned in Maine and employees will have the opportunity to apply for jobs at other Sears and Kmart stores, which is a Sears subsidiary.
Riefs said the chain is pursuing store closures as part of an effort to reduce ongoing expenses and accelerate a transformation of the company’s business model.
The closure leaves two remaining Sears stores in Aroostook County — in Fort Kent and Houlton. Both are independently owned.
