The rocky road of a proposed Dollar General store in Thomaston could end as town selectmen look to enact new zoning laws that would likely stop the development of the discount retailer on Route 1/Main Street.
The proposed zoning restrictions, according to the Bangor Daily News, would limit the size of any retail location at the former state prison lot to 2,500 square feet.
Dollar General had its eyes set on building a 9,100-square-foot location at the lot known as the Thomaston Green.
Town officials would like to hold a special town meeting to enact size restrictions before the November general election, but have yet to set a specific date.
This is the second development proposal this year for the construction of a Dollar General store on the Thomaston Green. In February, the town’s planning board passed on an initial proposal when the design of the store failed to meet commercial aesthetic standards known as the Thomaston Green design guidelines.
