Quimby withdraws national park plan

Philanthropist Roxanne Quimby’s family foundation has withdrawn its proposal for a 70,000-acre national park adjacent to Baxter State Park.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Quimby Family Foundation President Lucas St. Clair, Quimby’s son, said the proposal has been withdrawn from the National Park Service for the time being.

St. Clair told the paper that the family is seeking to form consensus around preservation and use of its 70,000 acres held under the nonprofit Elliotsville Plantation Inc. Earlier this week, the BDN reported that the plantation acquired another 8,313 acres adjacent to Baxter State Park from The Forestland Group of Chapel Hill, N.C.
