A Portland group of residents is seeking to hold a referendum that would protect the city’s scenic views and could have a major impact on a proposed mixed-use development.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the Soul of Portland group on Tuesday filed an affidavit with the city that would allow the group to collect signatures for the proposed referendum. The city is currently reviewing the referendum language.
The referendum, if ultimately approved by voters, would in part require the city to protect scenic views from upper Fore Street. It was filed in response to developer CPB2’s proposal to change the zoning at 58 Fore St. that would allow it to build taller buildings with a wider range of uses as part of its planned mixed-use development.
Jim Brady, a manager of CPB2, said it’s too early to say if the project will now face delays, adding that “having a cloud hanging over any approvals is certainly not a favorable idea.”
