After outgrowing its previous location in the Penobscot County town of Hermon, New Hampshire-based transportation and logistics company Ross Express has built a 19,000-square-foot freight facility in nearby Brewer.
The new location, in an industrial park owned by the Brewer Economic Development Corp., was purposely selected within a 10-mile radius of the former hub to retain the Hermon workforce and make it easier for employees to transition.
Along with keeping its current Maine workforce of 13 employees, Ross Express aims to add three commercial drivers to the team this year.
“The impact of the new facility allows us to continue to grow in northern Maine as well as process our customers’ shipments more efficiently,” said Stephen Brown, president of Ross Express.
“This facility services all of northern Maine right to the Canadian border,” he added. “The new building is state-of-the-art and will also be much more energy-efficient, as well as a huge improvement to the employee morale.”
The company has not disclosed the size of its investment.
Founded in 1947 with just one delivery truck, Ross Express has grown to cover the northeastern U.S. with six terminals across New England.
The company has also expanded to offer next-day delivery to Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, as well as parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
Ross Express, which is certified by the U.S. Department of Transportation to transport hazardous materials and by the federal Transportation Security Administration to ship air freight, delivers goods for industries including health care, food, pet supplies, farming equipment and construction materials.
In addition to trucking, Ross Express offers logistics services to coordinate deliveries outside of its shipping footprint.
