Out of all the cities in the U.S. to spend one’s golden years, Maine’s most populous metropolises hold their own in a national ranking by personal finance website WalletHub.
To determine the nation’s best retirement destinations, researchers assessed the retirement-friendliness of 182 cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state.
Cities were evaluated in terms of four factors: affordability, activities, quality of life and health care. Those were further broken down into 45 relevant metrics.
Maine’s two biggest cities — Portland and Lewiston — both made the top 100, but with quite a gap between them.
Despite a weak showing for affordability, Portland was No. 24 on the list, while Lewiston was ranked No. 91.
Orlando, Fla., home of Walt Disney World and other tourist attractions, was No. 1 on the list. It was followed by Scottsdale, Ariz.; Minneapolis and the Florida cities of Miami and Tampa to round out the top five.
San Bernardino, Calif., was dead last, at No. 182.
