Incentives to hire vets

On Nov. 21, 2011, President Obama signed into law the “Vow to Hire Heroes Act of 2011.” The law amends and expands federal tax credits available to businesses that hire veterans who begin work after Nov. 22, 2011, and before Jan. 1, 2013.

Here’s a summary of the changes:

  • For veteran hires who were unemployed for at least four weeks, a maximum tax credit of $2,400.
  • For veteran hires with a service-connected disability, a maximum tax credit of $4,800.
  • For veteran hires who were unemployed for at least six months, a maximum tax credit of $5,600.
  • For veteran hires with a service-connected disability who were unemployed for at least six months, a maximum tax credit of $9,600.
