Lawmakers are debating the merits of a sales tax holiday in Maine for the Columbus Day weekend.
The measure would suspend sales tax for purchases under $2,500, which proponents say would help spur retail spending in state, according to WCSH-6. The state’s taxation committee says that during the proposed three day weekend, Maine could stand to lose up to $6,351,600 in tax revenue. But supporters say that money would be made up with lodging and meal taxes, as is the case in Vermont and Massachusetts, which have a Columbus weekend sales tax holiday.
