Sales tax holiday considered

Lawmakers are debating the merits of a sales tax holiday in Maine for the Columbus Day weekend.

The measure would suspend sales tax for purchases under $2,500, which proponents say would help spur retail spending in state, according to WCSH-6. The state’s taxation committee says that during the proposed three day weekend, Maine could stand to lose up to $6,351,600 in tax revenue. But supporters say that money would be made up with lodging and meal taxes, as is the case in Vermont and Massachusetts, which have a Columbus weekend sales tax holiday.

Massachusetts has sales tax holiday the second Saturday and Sunday of August. However this year’s holiday is unlikely due to budget concerns in the State House.
