Small-scale satellites drive new demand

Overall costs of space launches are dropping, but that’s typically aboard massive launch vehicles that take on small satellites only as secondary cargo. Applied Thermal Sciences President Karl Hoose sees an opportunity for smaller, cheaper launch vehicles to serve the burgeoning commercial market for smaller payload classes, like the 10-centimeter cube-shaped satellites, called cubesats.

From 2003 to 2012, nearly all satellites in ATS’s prospective market weighed from two to 22 pounds, classified as nanosatellites, according to an annual commercial space transportation forecast by the Federal Aviation Administration. The next size of satellites are microsatellites, which range from 22 to 441 pounds.

“Microsats rarely drive launch demand and nanosats almost never do,” the FAA report states. “In the commercial space launch industry, launch providers are interested in creating space for smaller secondary payloads to drive the launch price down or increase profits.”

Hoose expects that increasing the frequency of flights where small satellites are the primary payload will open up that market, so that “constellations” of small satellites do the work of a larger unit.

Even without that increased launch frequency, the market for satellites on the small end of the spectrum continues to grow, according to the engineering consultancy SpaceWorks Enterprises Inc. The company reported that attempted launches of nanosatellites increased 330% from 2012 to 2013. From 2009 to 2013, just 10 commercial satellites weighing up to 110 pounds. went into orbit. The company projects that will jump to around 366 commercial launches for the period from 2014 to 2016.
