Sappi Fine Paper North America, which has a mill in Westbrook, has pledged $100,000 over four years to a new program at the University of Southern Maine to focus on educating students in science, math, technology and engineering.
The new Pioneers Program — focused on fields collectively known by the acronym STEM — was first set up in 2011 to give students in those fields access to a four-year scholarship package, according to a university press release.
The university program was founded on the idea that STEM fields will play an increasingly important role in the state’s economy by developing trained workers in fast-growing industries.
