Boston-based Sappi North America, a producer and supplier of diversified paper and packaging products with two mills in Maine, was honored with a ”Champion of Economic Development Award” from the Maine Development Foundation on Tuesday night.
Among the accolades cited for Sappi North America’s economic development recognition is the company employing over 1,300 Mainers at its two mills in Westbrook and Skowhegan, and its South Portland corporate office.
The MDF also lauded Sappi North America for its research and development efforts in the forest products industry, including its recently announced first of its kind casting and release paper inspired by the texture of shark skin, which creates surfaces that inhibit bacterial growth without using toxic additives or chemicals.
“Sappi has a deep history as a part of Maine’s pulp and paper industry, and our commitment to our surrounding communities is profound,” Mark Gardner, president and CEO of Sappi North America, said in a statement. “The state of Maine has been a good place for us to do business, and we will continue our investment in its people, its economy and our business for many years to come.”
