Sargent sells Hermon asphalt plant to Massachusetts contractor

Orono general contractor Sargent Corp. sold its Hermon hot mix asphalt plant and associated assets to All States Materials Group, a West Springfield, Mass.-based road construction company.

The sale price was not disclosed.

“This was a thoughtful decision based on where the market is today and where we believe Sargent is best positioned for the future,” said Eric Ritchie, Sargent’s president and CEO.

Decade-old facility

Sargent entered the hot-mix asphalt market in 2016 with the development of the Hermon plant, at 427 Emerson Mill Road, to bring additional service, quality and competition to the region. Since then, the plant has supported the Maine Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration, municipal, commercial and industrial projects, as well as Sargent’s own operations.

The sale includes the Hermon hot-mix asphalt plant, associated assets and roughly 16 acres of land.

Sargent will retain its rights to the Plymouth Quarry, a separate aggregate facility located 15 miles west at 2363 Moosehead Trail in Plymouth. Sargent said it will continue to support the Hermon plant through a long-term aggregate production agreement with All States.

“The Hermon plant has played an important role for us over the last decade, but our long-term direction is to stay focused on the core of what we do best,” said Ritchie. “This transition allows us to do that while keeping the plant in operation and positioned to continue serving the market.”

Sargent specializes in heavy civil construction: moving dirt, building infrastructure and delivering complex projects. It is involved with site work, highways and roads, utilities, landfill work, airports, renewable energy projects and other large civil construction work, a Sargent spokesperson told Mainebiz.

Asphalt and aggregate

Sargent was founded in 1926 and became employee-owned in 2013. Today, the heavy civil construction company has more than 650 employee-owners who build infrastructure, including renewable energy projects, highways, commercial site work, landfill cells, airport runways and underground utilities in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. In addition to its Orono headquarters, it has Maine facilities in Bowdoin and Farmington, as well as sites in New Hampshire, North Carolina and Virginia.

All States Materials Group provides products and services for the heavy- and highway-construction industry throughout the Northeast. With facilities and operations located across six states, its services include road maintenance and construction and bridge rehabilitation, as well as products including construction aggregates, bituminous concrete and liquid asphalts for contractors, municipalities and state departments of transportation.
