Scarborough residents on Tuesday narrowly defeated a proposal to allow a local harness racing track to operate slot machines in the town. Now the racetrack says it may relocate.
Local voters rejected the proposal to allow Scarborough Downs to operate slot machines at its racetrack by a vote of 5,804 to 5,565, according to unofficial results cited by the Portland Press Herald. The vote's results were delayed because of a voting machine error that occurred yesterday.
Sharon Terry, the racetrack's owner, issued a statement through her lawyer that she was disappointed in the outcome of the vote, according to the newspaper. Her lawyer said once the official results have been confirmed the track will consider alternatives, including moving the track to a locale more receptive to slot machines, the paper said.
Campaign finance reports filed before the election revealed that Penn National Gaming, the Pennsylvania-based company that operates Maine's only racino, Hollywood Slots in Bangor, was the sole funder of the political action committee behind the proposal to bring slot machines to Scarborough Downs.
