The Maine Senate has voted against a bill that would let the state’s Wabanaki tribes build a casino in northern Maine.
The Associated Press reported that the Republican-controlled Senate on Monday voted 18-16 against the bill. The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives voted in support of the bill last week. The news agency said the bill could die because of the disagreement between both chambers.
The bill calls for a competitive bid process that would award the project to whichever company can prove its proposal would have the most economic impact for the tribes. The legislation has faced opposition from Maine’s two existing casinos in Bangor and Oxford.
