The Passamaquoddy Tribe is receiving $11.4 million from the U.S. Department of Interior in the settlement of a claim of federal mismanagement of tribal assets. The tribe was one of 60 in the United States that filed a lawsuit against the department in 2006.
The Passamaquoddy Joint Tribal Council voted to ratify the settlement last month but will not discuss its details, according to The Associated Press. Members of the two Passamaquoddy communities of Pleasant Point and Indian Township have asked the council to distribute the money equally among all 3,369 tribal members, but a decision about its disbursement has not yet been made.
