Shaw’s Supermarkets is laying off 4% of its sales associate staff in New England, totaling about 1,200 workers.
In an announcement made yesterday, Shaw’s officials said employees in Maine would be affected, but did not specify how many, according to the Bangor Daily News. The supermarket chain, one of the state’s 10 largest employers, has 22 locations in Maine. Affected employees were notified Tuesday.
Shaw’s spokeswoman Judy Chong said the layoffs are part of the company’s efforts to streamline operations and “compete more effectively,” according to the paper.
