The parent company of Shaw’s plans to close the supermarket’s store in Biddeford, but said it isn’t the result of Market Basket’s arrival two years ago.
Brian Dowling, vice president of public relations for Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons, told the Portland Press Herald that the store, which employs 90 people, is set to close on July 4. He said the company will try to find jobs for employees at nearby locations.
Shaw’s faces tight competition in Biddeford, battling Hannaford, Wal-Mart and, most recently, Market Basket. But Dowling said the closure wasn’t the result of a single competitor like Market Basket, explaining that the store “had not been meeting performance expectations for quite some time in spite of our efforts.”
