Shaw’s to close Scarborough store, its second Maine closing this year

Shaw’s has announced that it will permanently close its Scarborough location at 417 Payne Road.

In addition, the store will be closing on or around Oct. 8. Pharmacy operations will end by Sept. 21.

The company will try to place supermarket employees at other Shaw’s locations, said spokesperson Teresa Edington.

“Like all retailers, we’re constantly evaluating the performance of our stores,” said Edington. “Closing a location is always a tough decision, but we’re focused on continuing to provide the products and services our customers value most in Maine and beyond.”

According to Edington, the Scarborough Shaw’s has 87 employees. Shaw’s operates 150 stores throughout New England, including 19 in Maine.

This is the second location to close this year. In January, Shaw’s announced it would be close the Westbrook location.

The parent company, Idaho-based Albertsons Cos. Inc. (NYSE: ACI), has owned Shaw’s since 2004 and has over 2,200 stores nationwide.
