So long, and thanks for the memories, Larry the lobster

It wasn’t smooth sailing for Larry, the 15-pound lobster that was spared a Sunrise, Fla., boil pot for the sweet life of luxury at the Maine State Aquarium in West Boothbay Harbor. The headline-grabbing lobster was found DOA when he arrived at the aquarium on Wednesday.

The Portland Press Herald reports that staff at the aquarium found the crustacean had left this mortal coil while unpacking him after his arrival.

Jeff Nichols, a spokesman for the Department of Marine Resources, which runs the aquarium, told the Press Herald that the gel packs that were supposed to protect Larry during his journey were found broken inside the package with the lifeless lobster.

“This lobster had a bit of a, you know, circuitous route from its origin,” Nichols told the Press Herald. “You need to really surround it in gel packs. This container really only had three.”
