South Portland’s former Pizza Joint to become fitness center

The former Pizza Joint in the busy Mill Creek neighborhood of South Portland has sold for $605,000 and will be repurposed as a fitness center.

The 1,621-square-foot space sits at 239 Ocean Ave., at the intersection of Broadway and across the street from the former Mahoney Middle School.

The building is smaller than traditional gyms, but new owner Doug Spurling told Mainebiz that the compact space suits his business model.

“We provide small group personal training for people over 50 who have never been to a gym before and are facing injuries, hence the small footprint we like,” he said.

This is Spurling’s third fitness center. His flagship gym opened in Kennebunk, at 1 Alewive Park Road, in 2012. This past summer he opened a second location at 10 Market St. in Scarborough’s Downs development and that space is also fairly compact at 1,446 square feet.

“We’re scaling locations through Maine and eventually New England,” Spurling said.

The South Portland location is targeted to open later this January.

Spurling was represented in the acquisition by Joe Atwood with the Dunham Group. The seller, Neal Mountain LLC, was represented by Kirk Butterfield with KW Commercial Group / Magnusson Balfour Brokers.
