General Dynamics Bath Iron Works is a full-service shipyard specializing in the design, building and support of complex surface combatants for the U.S. Navy. BIW’s rich history reflects a continuous pattern of innovation, new technology and process improvements. We are shipfitters, welders, electricians, pipefitters, designers, naval architects, engineers, ship operators and business professionals. We come from all over the U.S. and from all walks of life and each day we contribute to the defense of our nation.

Products: BIW designed and continues to build DDG 51-class Arleigh Burke destroyers, the Navy’s longest-running shipbuilding program. The shipyard is also responsible for modernization and lifecycle support of ships already deployed in the fleet.

Markets/customers: U.S. Navy.

Career/job opportunities: We are hiring for positions in all types of roles throughout our business, including surveyors, electricians, engineers, firefighters, designers, and maintenance mechanics. With almost 7,000 employees, the shipyard is often compared to a small city and supports its own security force, fire department, medical facility and finance department.

Company benefits: BIW offers employees a full suite of benefits including generous health insurance, retirement benefits and compensated time off.

Internship program: We have an extensive internship program that places college students in areas throughout the shipyard. Many of our interns have gone on to become valued full-time employees. We also have a Professional Development Program and Engineering Development Program for recent college graduates.

Community engagement: BIW values corporate citizenship and partners with a number of local organizations including area food programs. The shipyard also is a founding member of the United Way of Midcoast Maine and employees annually raise several hundred thousand dollars to support area programs.

Sustainability: BIW has emphasized community stewardship in its development of a plan to re-envision the Washington Street corridor in Bath where our main shipyard is located. This civic collaboration — engaging in a series of small group and large forum meetings with neighbors and other stakeholders — has contributed to an investment plan that maximizes green space, promotes cycling and pedestrian use and expands access to electric vehicle charging stations. BIW continues to subsidize shuttle and commuter bus use by our employees and work with GO MAINE to encourage employee ride sharing. New shipyard building construction includes resilient design to withstand rising sea levels. The company maintains one of the state’s most extensive recycling programs, annually removing thousands of pounds of scrap wood and steel from the waste stream.

“Building these destroyers means a lot to me, as my older sister served in the Navy. Everyone deserves top-quality work since some will call this ship home while out protecting our seas…We all have the same mission: show up, work hard, have an open mind and learn and work with everybody around you. It’s literally the coolest job I’ve ever done.”
