State launches business help site

Maine’s economic development agency has launched a new Web portal aimed at cutting red tape for new businesses registering with the state.

The Maine Department of Economic and Community Development on Wednesday announced the upgrade, which DECD Commissioner George Gervais said is the first in a series of changes to the state’s “Business Answers” Web portal.

The latest upgrade allows a prospective business owner to select one of 104 different business types and answer a series of related questions to produce a list of the relevant tasks, forms and information in a checklist. Users can set up accounts on the site to keep track of those forms and tasks as they are completed.

Paul VandenBussche, general manager of the state’s web content partner InforME, said the new website aims to create a central repository of information for starting a new business in the state.
