With scallop season trailing off early in some parts of the state and punctuated by state closures in others, marine resource authorities are looking to a new 10-year plan to rejuvenate scallop beds.
Working Waterfront reported that the proposal would divide the coast into three major zones further divided into sub-zones where closures would rotate with the intention of giving scallop populations a chance to recover from heavy harvests.
But Down East, where some of the prime scallop beds in the state are located, the state is considering a different option as well: shortening the harvest season and decreasing daily catch limits.
The state’s Department of Marine Resources will take public comments on the proposal through Monday.
