A shutdown at the Katahdin Paper Co. mill in East Millinocket is no longer looming, thanks to an influx of orders.
Company officials earlier this month predicted a shutdown would occur by the end of this week, but a steady stream of orders will keep both paper machines running for the rest of the month and into August, according to the Bangor Daily News. Bill Peterson, director of human resources for Fraser Papers, which manages the mill, declined to specify how many days of August and September are booked, but said the strong summer could indicate a healthy Christmas season.
The mill, managed by Fraser and owned by Brookfield Asset Management, employs about 491 workers and makes newsprint and telephone directory-grade paper.
