Study: ME taxes among toughest on biz

Maine joins California and Vermont among the 10 states with tax systems most inhospitable to businesses, according to a report released today by the Tax Foundation in Washington, D.C.

The “2008 State Businesses Tax Climate Index” measures how well a state’s tax structure encourages business investment by supporting a broad tax base and low rates, according to a press release. The index ranks states according to corporate tax, individual income tax, sales tax, unemployment tax and property tax.

Maine ranked 41 on the list. Wyoming topped it at number one, and Rhode Island brought up the rear at lowly number 50.
