Summer students up at comm. colleges

Enrollment for summer classes at Maine’s community colleges is up 16% compared with the summer season last year.

The Maine Community College System’s seven campuses enrolled 669 more students this summer than last summer, bringing total enrollment to nearly 5,000, according to the Kennebec Journal. Students signed up for summer classes jumped 60% at Central Maine Community College in Auburn, while York County Community College in Wells saw its enrollment rise 44%. At Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, the summer student population grew 13% this year.

MCCS President John Fitzsimmons attributed the increase to the tough economy and residents’ desire to boost their job skills, according to the paper.
