Susan Hunter will continue to serve as president of the University of Maine System’s flagship campus in Orono through June 30, 2018.
“President Hunter has set the standard for campus and cooperative leadership as we have worked to serve Maine as one university,” UMaine Chancellor James Page said in a release about the extension of Hunter’s term Thursday. “The advancement of UMaine’s statewide mission and the many contributions the flagship is making to our collective efforts to strengthen and extend public higher education for all Maine learners is testimony to President Hunter’s leadership and the dedication of her outstanding team.”
Hunter became the first woman to serve as president of UMaine’s Orono campus in July 2014. Before taking office, Hunter began her full-time career at the University of Maine in 1991 as a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences.
Her administrative positions at UMaine included chair of the Department of Biological Sciences and associate provost and dean for undergraduate education. Hunter also served five years as executive vice president for academic affairs and provost.
“It’s a privilege to be collaborating with leaders statewide who value UMaine’s distinctions and know that, together, we can help move Maine forward,” Hunter said in a prepared statement. “It’s an honor to be president of such a great university, working as a team within the UMaine community.”
