The planning board of Thomaston has decided against a development proposal that would have constructed a Dollar General store on a lot adjacent to the former Maine State Prison.
Around 60 residents attended the planning board meeting, many of whom were against the proposal due to local zoning standards that require any commercial buildings in the area to aesthetically resemble the surrounding residential areas.
The proposed Dollar General store would have been constructed on a 1.73-acre plot located on Main Street/Route 1 in the midcoast town next to a 16-acre green space that was once home to the Maine State Prison, which closed in 2002.
According to The Bangor Daily News, the planning board cited the commercial design standards, known as the Thomaston Green design guidelines, as the reason for not moving forward with the proposal.
“It’s off the table,” Code Enforcement Officer William Wasson told the BDN, adding that he wasn’t aware if the developer would submit a revised plan.
