We gathered a handful of energy industry leaders for a lively panel discussion how to generate the money and means to pursue Maine’s energy alternatives. During this discussion, Sara Burns, president and CEO of Central Maine Power Co., asked how the funds allocated to Efficiency Maine are spent. Efficiency Maine is a program of the Maine Public Utilities Commission that focuses on boosting the state’s electricity efficiency, and most of its funding comes from the systems benefit charge included in Mainers’ electric bills. In 2008, Efficiency Maine spent nearly $14 million on energy efficiency programs in the state, which the program says will generate an estimated $122 million in lifetime economic benefits by saving Mainers on their energy costs.
