The Eagle has landed: Massachusetts bank set to open its first Maine branch this summer

Eagle Bank, which is based in Everett, Mass., will open its first Maine branch this summer.

The Kennebunk location will be in the Hannaford shopping plaza at 65 Portland Road.

The branch will Eagle’s first retail location in Maine and is part of the bank’s strategic plan to continue to grow its retail and commercial footprint in southern Maine, said Marc Whittaker, the firm’s president and CEO.

A mid-July opening is expected, Whittaker told Mainebiz this week. Portland-based Woodhull is the architect and contractor on the fit-out of the 2,800-square-foot space (formerly Gorham Bike & Ski).

Eagle Bank had assets of $629.6 million as of Dec. 31, 2024, according to the latest data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. It was founded in 1889 as Everett Savings Bank. In Massachusetts, it has five branches: two in Everett and one each in Boston, Lexington and Middleton.

Presence in Maine

Whittaker said the bank already has a significant customer presence in Maine, so the branch was the natural next step.

“The bank, the board of directors and management team have existing and long-standing connections with many customers and businesses that reside and operate in Kennebunk and other parts of southern Maine,” he said in a press release. “We believe that opening a brick-and-mortar branch location in Maine is essential to service these customers and is a logical step for the continued organic growth of the bank.”

Jessica Owens will be vice president and retail banking team leader. As part of the bank’s management team, she will assume leadership responsibility for the bank’s southern Maine retail franchise. Owens previously worked at Kennebunk Savings Bank.

Eagle joins a crowded market: within a mile radius are competing branches from Kennebunk Savings, Bangor Savings, Camden National, Norway Savings, Maine Community Bank, KeyBank, TD Bank and M&T.
