Tourism tax revenue up

Revenue from Maine’s tourism industry is up, according to recent sales tax figures released by Maine Revenue Services.

Sales tax revenue in May for Maine restaurants increased 4% over the same month last year, according to news channel WCSH 6. Sales tax revenue from lodging in May jumped 9% over May 2007. The figures, which are not adjusted for inflation, could be signs that more people are staying in Maine for vacation.

Data on Maine’s tourism industry this year so far has been a mixed bag. Traffic on the turnpike dropped 4% in June, and is down 1.3% this year to date, according to the Associated Press.
