Maine is receiving $3.1 million in federal funding for public transportation projects.
The competitive grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation will go to the following projects, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins:
- $1.22 million, Sanford, to support the Sanford Transportation Center Project, which will serve as an intermodal hub for public transportation and intercity bus riders and will link to proposed park-and-ride facilities in York County. The project is part of the city’s plan to redevelop brownfields sites in the Mid-Town/Mill Yard area
- $1.15 million, Portland, to be used by the Portland METRO bus service to make significant upgrades to its transit facilities and purchase equipment for its bus service operations;
- $640,000, South Portland, to be used by the city to replace aging public transportation vehicles;
- $77,978, Hancock County, to be used by the Washington-Hancock Community Agency Pilot Project in Ellsworth to acquire vehicles to provide public transportation service to low-income housing projects to get people to jobs in rural areas.
