Lawmakers have given their first nod to a proposal that would let Maine’s Wabanaki tribes build their own casino in Aroostook or Washington counties.
The Associated Press reported that the House of Representatives supported the bill with a 114-26 vote after no debate. The bill faces more votes.
The bill calls for a competitive bid process that would award the project to whichever company can prove its proposal would have the most economic impact for the tribes. The legislation has faced opposition from Maine’s two existing casinos in Bangor and Oxford.
