Troubled mill to stay open, for now

Katahdin Paper Co.’s paper mill in Millinocket will remain open past its planned shutdown date, according to Gov. John Baldacci.

Baldacci yesterday told the Bangor Daily News that the facility, which was scheduled to close July 28 because of high oil costs, will remain operational “subject to continued customer orders and positive cash flow.” The mill employs 208 workers and is fueled entirely by oil.

The governor has been working with the company since late May to find alternative energy options to avert the closure, though he told the paper a solution has not yet been found.
