Tweeter shutters stores

Tweeter, the bankrupt electronics chain, yesterday abruptly closed its 70 stores and laid off 600 employees, according to the Boston Globe.

The retail electronics chain, which has a store in South Portland, filed for Chapter 11 in early November and began liquidation sales. But the company yesterday converted its case to a Chapter 7 and shuttered its stores, surprising employees and customers, many of whom still had merchandise in the stores, the paper reported. Upset employees struck back at the retail electronics chain, which is owned by New York investment firm Schultze Asset Management, by hacking the store’s website this morning and leaving a nasty message for the owner.

The phone for the South Portland Tweeter location has been disconnected. According to estimates from Dun and Bradstreet, the South Portland branch employed 15 people.
