The United States Department of Energy said yesterday it’s investing $30 million in an ethanol project at the University of Maine.
UMaine’s Forest Bioproducts Research Initiative will use the money over the next four years to research, develop, and commercialize a way to turn a wood extract into 2.2 million gallons of ethanol per year, according to a press release from Sen. Susan Collins’ office.
UMaine will develop and produce the technology at the former Georgia-Pacific mill in Old Town with RSE Pulp & Chemical and American Process Inc. of Atlanta, Ga., the release said.
