The unemployment rate dropped to an estimated 6.2% in January, down from a revised 6.4% in December and 7.0% one year earlier.
The Maine Department of Labor reported the preliminary figures estimate 43,900 job seekers were unable to find work in January, compared with 45,087 in December and 49,513 in January 2013.
The latest figures trend below the national unemployment rate, estimated at 6.7% in January. Compared to other New England states, Maine’s unemployment rate was higher than Vermont (4.0%) and New Hampshire (4.9%) in the latest estimates and lower than Massachusetts (6.8%), Connecticut (7.2%) and Rhode Island (9.2%).Â
