Vena’s Fizz House, Portland ‘mixology’ shop, acquires cocktail ingredient maker

Vena’s Fizz House, a bar and “mixology” shop in Portland’s Old Port district, has acquired Maine-based Coastal Root Bitters Co.

Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

“After five years of growing Coastal Root Bitters Co. alongside our growing family, I realized it was time to sell the business. Our bitters could not have found a more natural home in the world,”  Nolan Stewart, Coastal Root’s founder and owner, said in a press release Wednesday.

In addition to serving drinks at its 345 Fore St. location, Vena’s markets ingredients and accessories for cocktail enthusiasts, including syrups, shakers, muddlers, vintage glassware, coasters, and more. The company also produces its own line of bitters that are wholesaled nationally.

The Coastal Root bitters will be added to Vena’s product mix and marketed under their current brand, according to the release.

Bitters are extracts from berries, flowers, barks and other plant substances.

“Bitters are to cocktails as spices are to food. They improve and align flavors just like spices do,” said Steve Corman, who co-founded Vena’s in 2013 with his wife, Johanna Corman.
