A new WalletHub survey listed Maine as the 23rd best state in which to retire, as a strong showing in quality of life was overshadowed by lower marks in terms of affordability.
The survey ranked all 50 states based on affordability, quality of life and health care, which were further broken down into 46 metrics.
Affordability took into account adjusted cost of living as well as general tax-friendliness and the percentage of the population age 65 and above who could not afford a doctor visit
Maine was ranked 39th in affordability and 14th in health care, but had its best showing in quality of life, in the No. 10 spot.
Maine was also listed among the top five states with the most museums per capita and the lowest property-crime rate.
Besides looking at a state’s share of population age 65 and older, the quality of life calculation also looked at risk of social isolation and the percentage of the 65-and-older demographic working, as well as state expenditures on that group.
Florida, South Dakota and Colorado were No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively, on the overall list, while Kentucky came in last, at No. 50.
