Where Maine homebuyers came from in 2024

Maine continues to be a hotspot for “people from away” buying vacation homes or relocating in retirement.

According to the latest numbers compiled by Maine Listings, Massachusetts residents were the most active out of state buyers, accounting for 8.71% of purchases.

They were followed by our “Live Free or Die” neighbors in New Hampshire at 4.11%, Floridians at 2.21% and New Yorkers at only 1.41%.

Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia residents came north as well, but in smaller numbers.

Still, the largest percentage of single-family home buyers in Maine, 69.27%, were existing Maine residents.

Derrick Buckspan, owner of RE/MAX Shoreline, notes that his team is seeing continued interest in relocating to Maine from western states, particularly Arizona, but California, Texas and Colorado residents are buying here, too.

“Maine continues to be a highly desirable place to call home,” he said. “Whether it’s our state’s natural beauty, strong sense of community, or reputation as a safe and family-friendly place to live, people from across the country are choosing Maine.”

RE/MAX Shoreline has offices in Portland, Falmouth and Portsmouth, N.H.
