A new Portland Press Herald analysis published Friday gives a snapshot of how much of a negative impact this year’s winter had on Maine and greater Portland’s economy.
The analysis, which was conducted by Atlanta-based First Data Corp., a credit and debit card processing company that handles almost half of all transactions nationwide, shows consumer spending in Maine between Jan. 24 and Feb. 22 experienced a 2.8% year-over-year growth in 2014. The same period in 2015 saw a 0.3% decline. For Portland, spending during that same period in 2014 saw a 2.9% increase and slumped to a 0.5% decline this year.
