WinterKids

2026 Goals

In 2025 and 2026, WinterKids aims to deepen children’s engagement in outdoor winter experiences across all 16 counties in Maine, with a focus on under-resourced communities that face barriers to outdoor play. Our primary goals include increasing participation in our core programs: the Winter Games, Learn Outside Guide, Snowshoe and Story Walk, and Passport. To do this, we will expand outreach in Western and Northern Maine by partnering with local schools, recreation departments, and community organizations, and by training more educators to use our resources confidently.

We also plan to grow our Snowflake Club monthly giving program by 100 members, building the financial sustainability needed to support our program expansion. Together, these goals reflect our commitment to equitable access to outdoor learning and play, supporting the health and well-being of Maine children while building a strong, connected community of families, educators, and supporters statewide.

Fundraising Events/Opportunities

WinterKids’ signature fundraising event, Downhill 24, is a round-the-clock celebration of winter, wellness, and community. Held each February at Sugarloaf, this 24-hour team ski, skin, and snowboard challenge brings together hundreds of participants and supporters to raise critical funds that get Maine kids outside, active, and thriving in the winter.

Businesses and foundations can amplify their support by becoming WinterKids Community Partners. Aligned with our mission and values, Community Partners receive year-round recognition and engagement opportunities at high-visibility events including Welcome to Winter, the Winter Games, and Downhill 24.

To cap off the season, WinterKids will host a special partner panel and celebration in the Freeport region, recognizing 25 years of building resilient, healthy Maine kids through outdoor learning and play. It’s a chance to connect, reflect, and look ahead together.

Community Partners don’t just sponsor events; they help shape the future of outdoor education and wellness for thousands of children across Maine; building joy, growth, and resilience in our kids and creating a healthier and more active Maine, one winter outing at a time.

Giving Opportunities

At WinterKids, we believe every child deserves the chance to build healthy, active habits through outdoor play, especially in winter. There are two powerful ways to support this mission. First, by joining our Snowflake Club, you can make a monthly gift that provides steady, reliable funding. Monthly donors help us reach more kids, more consistently, with deeper, year-round engagement. It’s an easy, meaningful way to make a big difference over time.

Second, businesses and foundations can become Community Partners. Powering general support that allows us to scale our programs across all 16 counties in Maine. These partnerships help remove barriers to access, increase our educational reach, and build lasting habits in the next generation.

Whether you’re an individual or a business, your support fuels a healthier, more active future for Maine kids. Together, we’re getting kids outside, moving, learning, and exploring one community, and one joyful winter day at a time.

Volunteer Opportunities

Businesses and individuals can donate their time to WinterKids by volunteering to prepare materials for events including the Winter Games, Welcome to Winter and D24, offering pro bono services, or applying to be an ambassador. We also welcome skilled support in areas like photography or design. Reach out to us and we’ll help find the right fit!
